A boom lift that reaches the required height but cannot get into position, travel safely across the ground or clear an obstacle is not the right machine for the job. Choosing the right boom lift starts with the work area, not the platform height on the specification sheet. For contractors and site teams working to a programme, getting this decision right protects productivity, keeps operatives safe and avoids costly changes once equipment is on site.
Start with the point of work
The first question is simple: where does the platform need to be? Measure the working height required, then consider the horizontal distance from the machine’s likely set-up position to the task. A boom lift is selected for its ability to place people, tools and materials accurately at height, often where a scissor lift or ladder cannot provide practical access.
Working height should include the actual task position, not just the height of a roof edge, lighting column or façade detail. Allow for the operator’s standing position in the basket and for any change in level across the site. If the work is beneath an overhang, behind a parapet or above plant and structures, the required outreach and articulation may matter more than maximum vertical height.

Choosing the right boom lift for ground conditions
Ground conditions affect both machine choice and safe operation. Before delivery, establish whether the boom lift will work on concrete, tarmac, compacted stone, grass, made ground or a combination of surfaces. Check for slopes, trenches, basements, service covers, drainage runs and recently backfilled areas. These details are particularly relevant on changing construction sites, where a route that was suitable one week may not be suitable after excavation or poor weather.
Electric boom lifts suit many indoor and hard-surfaced applications. They produce no diesel emissions at the point of use and are generally well suited to warehouses, factories, retail environments and facilities-maintenance work. Their tyres and compact dimensions can also make them a sensible option where floor protection, low noise and restricted access are priorities.
Diesel boom lifts are generally better suited to outdoor work, particularly where uneven terrain and longer travel distances are involved. Rough-terrain models offer stronger traction and ground clearance, but they still need suitable bearing capacity and a properly planned route. Four-wheel drive is not a substitute for an assessment of soft or unstable ground.
For confined external sites, a tracked spider lift can be a better answer than a conventional self-propelled boom. These machines can pass through narrow access points and operate with relatively low ground pressure, depending on the model and conditions. They need careful set-up and outrigger positioning, so the available footprint remains an essential part of the survey.
Check access before checking the specification
A machine may be ideal at the workface but impossible to deliver to it. Confirm gate widths, headroom, bridge limits, road restrictions and the distance from the unloading point to the work area. Consider parked vehicles, shared access routes, school or public-facing areas, and whether the machine must pass through a building.
For internal work, record door widths, floor loading, lift capacities and ventilation arrangements. For external projects, confirm whether a delivery lorry can safely unload without obstructing the highway or neighbouring properties. Early planning is particularly useful in London and busy South East sites, where delivery windows and limited set-up space can dictate the most practical access solution.
Match platform capacity to the task
Platform capacity is not simply a headcount. It includes operatives, hand tools, materials, test equipment and any approved accessories. A two-person job with heavy cable trays, glazing tools or maintenance components may require more capacity than a larger platform used by one operative carrying light equipment.
Never plan to exceed the manufacturer’s rated platform capacity or use the basket as a lifting point unless the machine and attachment are specifically approved for that purpose. Materials should be secure and kept within the platform, with no overhanging loads that could affect safe travel or create a strike risk.
Consider how long the work will take at each position. If teams need to move regularly along a façade, a boom lift with good drive-at-height capability may save time. If they are working in one fixed area for a prolonged period, an operated lorry-mounted platform or alternative access method may offer a more efficient set-up. The right choice depends on the sequence of work, not only the first task on the programme.
Plan around people, traffic and overhead risks
Boom lift selection forms part of the wider work-at-height plan. The site team should identify exclusion zones, pedestrian routes, vehicle movements and the possibility of overhead hazards before the machine is delivered. Power lines require particular care. The safe approach distance, voltage and control measures must be established in line with the relevant guidance. If there is uncertainty, treat the risk as live until the network operator confirms otherwise.
Wind can also affect what is safe and productive. Outdoor machines have manufacturer limits for wind speed, while indoor-rated equipment may not be suitable for exposed use at all. Local gusts around tall buildings, open elevations and coastal sites can be more severe than a general weather forecast suggests. Supervisors should monitor conditions throughout the shift, not only at the start of the day.
Where the public or other trades are nearby, the job may need barriers, banksmen and a planned working zone. A boom lift creates moving and overhead risks as it travels and slews, so communication between the operator, ground team and site management is essential.
Decide whether operated hire is the better route
Self-operated hire can be appropriate where the team is trained, authorised and familiar with the selected machine. However, complex lifts, restricted sites, public-facing work and projects with tight programmes often benefit from an experienced, certified operator.
Operated hire provides a clear point of control for machine set-up and use, while helping the site team maintain momentum. It can be especially useful where the work involves difficult positioning, limited set-up time or multiple changing work locations. The operator still works within the site’s agreed plan and exclusion arrangements, but their practical machine knowledge can reduce avoidable delays.
